Now live: v1.2 of the demo!


That's right, the itch.io version is now updated to v1.2.2! This includes changes from the v1.2, v1.2.1, and v1.2.2 patches.

The patch notes follow, but please note that some of these update notes will only be relevant to the full game, which you can get on Steam here!

v1.2 Patch Notes

Event and start of floor card art

- Adds awesome new art for these cards:

Every event.
Every event choice.
Every card choice (e.g. Rules Card, Scratchcard).
The start of every floor (these are even animated).
Pause menu.
End of a run.

Above Witch Tarot deck

- you can now swap between the classic Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot deck and the brand new, bespoke Above Witch Tarot deck, expertly pixelled by Boba-Witch.

Community Card Back designs

- 5 new card backs as designed by the community!

Queen of Music is back, and brought Tokens along for the ride!

- reworks Queen of Music and makes it available again:

Exploit: add 1 token. If there are already 2 tokens, instant blackjack then remove all tokens.

- swaps Get Well Soon Card over to the token system, so description becomes:

On play: lock.

On taking damage: add 1 token. If there are already 3 tokens, heal 10 HP and burn.

- swaps Vaccination Card over to the token system, so description becomes:

On taking damage: gain 5 shield and add 1 token. If there are already 3 tokens, burn.

Card reworks:

- King of Gold:

On playing another card: +1 value to that card and change its suit to Diamonds.

- Fingerprint Card:

Value is now 5 (was 10).

On play or exploit: exploit all of your played cards that have exploit.

- Plate of Escardgot:

Value is now 7 (was 1).

On play: rounds up.

On hit while worth at least 1: -1 value.

On stand: grant shield equal to value.

- King of Kings:

On play: halve the value of all other currently played Kings.

- Non-Fungible Card:

On hit: reduce value by a random number between 1 and 3. Cannot be reduced below 1.

On stand: gain chips equal to value.

- II The High Priestess:

On play or on playing another card: Foresight 1.

- 5 of Swords:

Value is now 0 (was 5).

On play: +5 value.

- Hall Pass:

Value is now 1 (was 0).

On play or exploit: foresight 1.

Card balancing:

- The Lovers VI: Now also resets max scores on play.

- Reverse Card: Now burns on discard.

- Queen of Wonderland: Can now halve her own value. Cannot target cards worth -1 or 1 any more (since they cannot be halved)

- Credit Card Knife: Now costs 10 chips and cost increases by 10. Exploit effect is no longer activated if you do not have enough chips.

- Master of One: Now adds a matching One to the foe's side as well

- XIII Death and Death XIII: Values are now 0 (were 13)

- Radiation Detector: You now take 2 damage on play, and it unlocks the changed card immediately rather than on stand.

- Rules Card: Can no longer choose to set the max score to the current max score (i.e. a max score must change)

- The Lovers VI: Now has a value of -6 (was 6).

- XI Strength: Now has a value of -11 (was 0).

- Strength XI: Now has a value of 11 (was 0).

- Four of a Kind: Now gives 4x cards with value from 1 - 3 (was 1 - 5).

- Queen of the Stone Age: Is now a Club (was a Spade). Now triggers when a 3 or 7 is played on either side.

- Blood Donor Card: Now triggers when a Heart worth 1 or more is played on either side.

- Get Well Soon: Value is now 5 (was 0), suit is now Hearts (was Nothings).

- +2 Card: Value is now 2 (was 0).

- Reverse Card: Value is now 1 (was 0).

- Ace Up Your Sleeve: Value is now 11 (was 0). Is now flexible (11 or 1).

- Kanban Card: Value is now 2 (was 0).

- Dark Mage: Value is now 5 (was 0).

Unique Chips balancing:

- Broken Chip: Start with 1 Advantage. (Starts with 0 Advantage at DD+)

On either player bust: gain 1 Advantage.

Event balancing:

- The three choices in Overdue Taxes event are now:

Pay taxes: Pay 1000 chips and permanently remove a card.

Evade taxes: Take 10 damage, and permanently replace a card from your deck with a random Minor Arcana 5.

Declare Bankruptcy: Pay all your chips, take 10 damage, and permanently remove a card.

- Crown & Anchor:

Spades, Clubs, and Crowns in the Crown & Anchor event now offer a choice of 5 cards instead of 3.

- Dungeon Counterfeiter:

Up to 4 cards can now be duplicated at the Dungeon Counterfeiter, but the chip cost doubles each time.

Starting Deck balancing:

- Signature Hearts now starts with a 5 of Swords instead of 5 of Hearts

- Signature Spades now starts with a Jack and the Beanstalk and a Queen of Chess

- Signature Diamonds now starts with a King of Gold instead of King of Diamonds

Other improvements:

- clicking either player's score card will show which cards were in play at the end of the previous round, and what the score was at end of round

- improves the draw and discard pile previews (as well as foresight) to give better context as to which piles those previews are from

- improves the "click away from a card to dismiss a pile preview" functionality

- MASSIVE optimisation to the load time of the game, it should boot around 8x faster now

- adds the ability to restart a run by holding the hotkey (R on keyboard, R3 on controller)

- makes changes to the glitch intensity settings take effect immediately

- changes the first tarot to be one that is not completed at current difficulty level (if there is one) instead of not completed at Play it Safe only (this will help completionists get stickers on their last remaining tarot cards)

- Unique Chip rerolls will now never show a Unique Chip that was in the previous selection

- Unique Chip rerolls will now cycle through all Unique Chips (in a random order) until all have been shown at least once

- adds The Dealer as a card origin, Scratches created as part of the softlock prevention have this origin (note that this will also mean that these Scratches can now be burned by The Lovers VI)

- Killer Queen now increases its value before making the choice of which card to burn so that it is clearer what your current total score is when you are making that choice (note that it still will not increase value if there are no cards to burn)

- increases the spread of cards held in hand

- update art for collection stickers

- changes 11 of Nothings to be after the 10 of Nothings in Collection (was previously after the King of Nothings)

- adds an fps cap of 240fps for in case vsync fails for some reason

- tweaks to Fortune Teller text position so that it fits better for longer languages

- a bunch of minor card description tweaks and standardisations

Bug fixes:

- fixes a bug where the Most Removed card in Collection would display the wrong card

- fixes a bug where cards that are triggered on bust would not trigger if those cards were face down due to XVIII The Moon or The Moon XVIII

- this fixes an odd interaction with a locked Rorschach Card and a The Chariot VII where opponent wouldn't be forced to stand by the Rorschach

- fixes a bug where a Glitched Card that rolled XI Strength or Time Card could not be Exploited, even if the conditions to do so were met

- fixes a bug where The Chariot VII would choose the wrong value to set to if a Jumping Jack had been moved to the foe's side when drawing the Chariot

- fixes a bug where subsequent cards earned from Slot Machine would always have the same 3 distress/grime patterns as the first 3 rolled

- fixes a bug where the Dungeon Counterfeiter would not copy the permanent status of cards like Loyalty Card, or Birthday Card

- fixes a bug where Crown and Anchor event wouldn't let you bet again if you won on Diamonds while having less than 21 chips

v1.2.1 Patch Notes

- moves the shown cards in Runaway Cart event to the right side to better match the event card art

- fix for a bug where if you clicked fast enough you could add 2 Tarot Cards to your deck from the same Fortune Teller event

- fixes a bug where a Glitched Card copying Fingerprint Card would softlock due to continuously exploit Glitched Fingerprint Cards, including itself

- fixes a bug where the game would crash if a Fingerprint Card burned itself due to exploiting an Insurance Card while having another exploitable card in play

- fixes a bug where some dev tooling could show up when reloading a run

v1.2.2 Patch Notes

Less wasteful exploitation

- overhauls the system for exploiting cards so that the game will check if the card can be exploited before exploiting it, meaning that Advantage is not wasted if the card's condition is not met. e.g. exploiting a Time Card while having no 9 or 5 in play will not cost 1 Advantage anymore. This improves:

Card changes

- changes Insurance Card to not allow going into debt (will not burn a card and reduce chips if you don't have enough chips to do so)

- changes Bounce Card to not be able to select itself when played from hand

Explanation:

In v1.1 if you played Bounce Card from hand it would ensure that it would not select itself since it felt bad to play it from hand and have it immediately bounce back. In v1.2 I added "or exploit" to Bounce Card, so at the same time I made it so that it can select itself. Otherwise when exploiting you can reliably use all Advantage to clear all your played cards. Now I have changed it so that these are treated slightly differently, so the card will use the v1.1 behaviour when played and the v1.2 behaviour when exploited. This means you still don't feel bad when playing from hand but you can't abuse via exploit. Best of both worlds!

- changes Magic Trick Card base value to 10

Other improvements

- adds a Santa hat and a Snowy border to the id card portrait customisation components

- reorganises the Dungeon Collector event layout to be more intuitive

- reduces hold R to restart time to 2.5s (was 5.5s)

- improves performance of flying suit icons that cards create, like diamonds created by Time Card

Bug fixes

- fixes a bug where the Dealer origin would not be correctly displayed on the Scratches created as part of the Dealer's softlock prevention

- fixes a bug where a Foil card that had foil keyword in its description would show the foil tooltip twice

- fixes a bug where the Score Card was interactable in some states where it shouldn't have been

- fixes a bug where the draw pile preview from II The High Priestess was not able to be cleared by clicking on the darkened area if the card that was played was a card that required a choice to be made

- fixes a bug where changing the volume of the music while outside of an encounter would bring back the encounter-specific track of the previous encounter

- fixes a bug where it was possible to click on Dungeon Collector choices more than once

- fixes a bug where Bounce Card didn't have the Handy keyword tooltip

- fixes a bug where flying suit icons would be spawned behind the card that created them if that card was hovered

- fixes a bug with XIII Death where it would not ever select cards for shredding that were in the player's hand

- fixes a bug where Chipotle Pepper could be activated multiple times very quickly leading to strange interactions with "on damage taken" cards

- fixes a bug where Chipmunk was setting Advantage to the wrong starting number when rolled by Chip Off the Old Block

- fixes a bug where a Fingerprint Card exploiting a Big 2 turning that Fingerprint Card into a Big 2 while the Fingerprint Card (now a Big 2) had at least one more card left to exploit during its exploit effect would cause a softlock

- fixes a bug where Fingerprint Card would appear to try to exploit a Glitched Card that did not have Exploit in its new description

- fixes a bug where using an external controller on Steam Deck with Steam Input on would lead to double inputs (note this bug is still present on MacOS, so you may need to experiment with Steam Input settings for this game if you are using a controller with MacOS)

- fixes a bug where the red exclamation marks for unused/unseen elements would not work on very first time launching the game

- fixes a bug where if you swapped between mouse and keyboard/controller navigation a card could get stuck as hovered after clicking on it

- fixes a bug where the discard pile tutorialisation exclamation mark icon would stay where the discard pile was even after the discard pile was shuffled back into the draw pile
